Following along the lines of privacy and surveillance I was even more perturbed to read about Facebook’s Beacon. This piece of software enables external websites to send information to Facebook which is then represented in your news feed to other users. Initially it seems that his software didn’t even have an opt-out, which meant it was in violation of the Data Protection Act 1998. Imagine the horror of having your order of blue Pills, inflatable dolls and a Galleon of non-oil based lubricant broadcast to your ‘friends’ or even worse someone might find out that you are really a secret fan of Celine Dion. Due to public pressure facebook has given users the option of opting out. However this software will still be lurking in your browser, merrily collecting information and sending it on to facebook. It will access the saved log in details in your browser to link it to your account, even if you choose to opt out…

Facebook appears to have realized what a mistake it has made with this advertising program.
