Government scrambles to keep ID card report secret

In the interests of a democratic and open society citizens must be able to view reports on schemes that will affect their relationship with the state. The ID card scheme has the potential to severely alter the relationship between individual and state. William the Conqueror understood well how necessary information was in controlling population and state which is why he commissioned the Doomsday book in 1085. This wasn’t done in order to provide a nice record for present day historians but rather as a tool for finding out how much tax could be raised and what lands could be robbed and allocated. The ID card scheme and more importantly the National Identity Register NIR is New-labors doomsday book. Never before has such detailed information about citizens and their lives been collected by the state.

The government claims that this information is being collected to make our lives easier and to improve the economy. If this is the case then surely we should have access to reports onto the benefits of the scheme. Why therefore is the government going to the high court in order to try and appeal against an order given by the information tribunal on the 3rd of May? This order would allow us the citizens to view a paper that assess the potential benefits of the scheme. What could possible be wrong with us seeing this information? It appears this information exchange between citizen and state is a one sided affair. Business and government can view your personal details but you can’t view details about Government and Business. Economic interests are protected under the freedom of information act, but us citizens are forced to attend ‘enrolment’ centers where our data will be taken from us as a legal requirement. Private property and capital receives the backing of the law and our personal data is treated with contempt and left on insecure database systems. It’s a fucking disgrace and I’m not having it.

I think we can both agree that this utterly sucks arse.
I’d like to say I’m not having it but we’d have to live in a democracy for that to matter.
